Strathcona Elementary School's library and those who use it are proud to live, work, play and read on the Stó:lō unceded traditional territory of the Pilalt tribe.

This year, my journey towards reconciliation involves broadening my own knowledge and understanding of the Halq'emeylem language, incorporating local Stó:lō stories into library time, introducing traditional language to students, and elevating the visibility and accessibility of indigenous books in the library collection.

~EDUCATIONAL PEDAGOGY PERSPECTIVES ~

Educational Pedagogical Perspectives, will provide a diverse range of viewpoints on education, schools, and learning. It will offer insights from experts in the field, including teachers, researchers, and policymakers. The section aims to foster a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding education and to encourage critical thinking about the future of learning.

This month, I'd like to share another podcast from Tes Pedagogy Podcast titled, What research says about motivating pupils - and ourselves.

Motivation matters: naturally, we all know this. It’s what drives us, as humans, to behave and act in a certain way. In schools, you’d struggle to find a teacher, or even a pupil, who would say that motivation doesn’t have a part to play in teaching and learning.

However, up until recently, the science behind motivation was a mystery to classroom teachers. Peps Mccrea, the dean of learning design at the Ambition Institute, and director of research and development at Steplab, has been a key player in this change.

In 2020, he published Motivation Teaching, a book which shifts through the science to bring educators practical advice about motivation. In this episode of Tes pedagogy, Mccrea explains his findings and shares the approaches to boosting motivation in your classroom.

~ chess tournament ~

The school has caught the chess fever! Many students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are actively participating in the chess club, striving to enhance their skills and understanding of the game. In recognition of their dedication, we have arranged an after-school tournament for students to sharpen their abilities in a round-robin style event on Tuesday, May 14th, from 3 pm to 5 pm. If you'd like to enroll your child, please complete the attached Microsoft Form. Space is limited to 14 students, so it's first-come, first-served. Once we have our 14 players signed up, permission slips will be sent out for you to confirm your child's attendance.

Books and other library materials all have archenemies. One of those just happens to be the mighty elements themselves. How you ask? Well, just watch this video. And remember, book care, it's good for everyone!

It is crucial to store and transport these books within a protective 'second skin,' such as a book bag (available for purchase at the library for just $1) or a similar water-resistant bag.

~ AI PERSPECTIVES ~

In our new AI Perspectives section, let's delve into conversations around generative AI. Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can generate new content, such as text, images, or even music, based on patterns and data it has been trained on. It's like a creative tool that can produce somewhat original outputs.

However, it's essential to clarify what generative AI is not. It is not sentient or conscious; it lacks self-awareness and does not possess personal experiences or emotions. Generative AI operates based on the patterns it has learned from the input data and cannot think or understand concepts in the same way humans do.

As we explore AI perspectives, I'll aim to share how generative AI impacts our lives and its potential applications in education. If you have any specific questions or topics you'd like us to cover in future newsletters, feel free to let me know!

AI USE in education

AI Literacy encompasses

AI Potential Benefits in Schools

It's like having a super-smart computer program that can learn and adapt. In schools, AI is being used to create a more exciting and personalized learning experience for kids from kindergarten to grade 12! Imagine a program that adjusts to your child's pace, offering extra help when needed or giving them a challenge if they're zooming ahead. These are adaptive learning platforms, and they use AI to tailor lessons to each child's strengths and weaknesses. Think of a patient tutor who can answer questions 24/7. Personalized tutoring systems powered by AI can do just that! They can explain concepts in different ways, offer practice problems, and give encouraging feedback, just like a real tutor.  Learning can be fun too! AI-powered educational games can transform math drills or vocabulary building into interactive adventures. Kids can earn points, solve puzzles, and get rewarded for learning, making them eager to come back for more. AI is a powerful tool that can support teachers and create a more engaging learning environment for your child. Stay tuned for future newsletters where we'll explore more about AI and how it's being used in our library!

~ POSITIVITY - INSPIRATION - JOY - INQUIRY - INFORMATION ~

There’s an oft-repeated question, a conversational game of sorts, that asks, “If you could go back in time and change one thing in the history of the world, what would you change?” We sometimes forget that one thing can be done right now to positively impact the future.

Families often struggle to balance work commitments with spending quality time together. This award-winning 2D and stop-motion animated short, created with detailed physical sets, focuses on that challenging intersection.

In Felt Love, a young boy named Bo learns to understand the depth of his mother Yue’s love and hard work “despite the distance her dedication may create.”
